doG Backwards is Guy A Johnson's debut novel.

'Really liked! V interesting, gripping and unusual!' - Sophie Hannah, bestselling author of 'Little Face' and 'Kind of Cruel.'

doG Backwards is the story of six lives that come together through an unimaginable opportunity to meet with the dead for just one hour.
Michael works in an office and is mourning the loss of his five-year-old daughter, Milly.
Barbara has her own cleaning company and the death of her stepfather, Eric, hangs heavy on her conscience.
Connor is ten and, despite having the love of his aunt and uncle, still misses his mother, who has been dead for over a year.
Liam lives in his big family home all by himself, where he hides from his past and yearns for the return of his mother, father and sister, all of whom are gone for good.
Shelley, friend and lover to Liam, also has her losses, but keeps these a secret from him.
Their reactions are very different. Michael’s is very positive he simply cannot believe his luck. The others, however, do not react in the same way Shelley is disgusted, Barbara cannot face making a decision and ten-year-old Connor simply doesn’t understand.
There are further complications. Michael has to consider his estranged wife, Susan she has not been chosen for the program. Barbara discovers the experience is likely to leave her penniless. Connor has not only lost his mother, but also his father. So he is faced with a dilemma that no ten-year-old boy should ever have to face which one to choose?

doG Backwards is a brilliant idea, a thought-provoking plot with complex characters and excellent pacing. The author mixes the stories of the main characters beautifully, letting out a little information at a time so that we race to the end to find out how it all resolves. I thought the author did an enviable job of merging the stories and hiding important plot points until the big reveal. Well done.
As another reviewer mentioned, the POV changes, sometimes within a paragraph but I took this to be the writers' style. There were many instances I wondered what Johnson meant but kept reading with the idea that he's British, I'm American, and maybe that's what they say across the pond.
I took 1 star off because for me, there were still some questions at the end. I didn't feel the complete resolution that I wanted. BUT, I felt that the book was brilliantly done, questioning the afterlife and those left behind after a death. Loved how all the stories tied in to each other like a grand puzzle. Well done. If you like strange concepts (life after death) and appreciate fresh literature, I highly recommend you give this a try. And don't let that cryptic prologue put you off. Push on through.

Good read. Enjoyed the concept but sometimes found it hard to follow. However, I enjoyed the book and would recommend it to others.
I love the concept of the story, and was fascinated as the events unfolded and the character connections became evident. I also really like a story which leaves some of the ends undone, allowing you to create your own resolution. Excellent first novel, now need to waste no time downloading the next one from Guy!
Although there are quite a few character to keep straight, I highly enjoyed this book. I found myself asking what I would do if put in the characters situation. Definitely worth reading!
This is a most unusual read - wouldn't even be able to catagorize it. It started out a little slowly in a mundane sort of way and then caught me up in an avalanche of urgency to find the answers and emotions. Cannot recommend this highly enough to describe the way this author wove the elements of the story together.
This book has a really interesting storyline, but I didn't much like the ending which seemed really abrupt and without any resolution. So it actually felt like an unfinished story to me.
I got this book for free when it was on the Buffett list. I did not know the author but thought it might interest me. This book was excellent and held my attention. Very few errors.

What would you do if given the chance to have one more hour with a dead loved one? \Who would you choose? What would you want to say to them? That is the theme explored in this book where all the characters (Connor, MIchael, Barbara) are given the opportunity to have this experience. The book reminded me of the movie "Crash" in some ways and when it ends you will know what I mean -- connections. It does make you think about things like whether such an experience would be helpful or harmful; whether it would bring closure; and whether it would be moral, humane, or ethical to give someone such a choice.
The writer had a good premise going, but the execution was a bit on the disjointed side. Two things didn't work for me, first the point of view changed within a scene. The writing would have a strong sense of third person and then slip into first person and back to third person. This resulted in breaks in the flow of moving the plot forward. The second difficulty for me was the number of characters to keep track of. You go several chapters before a character comes back up and it takes awhile to to remember what their story line. There were many times I considered not finishing the book. That all said, I thought the ending was brilliant.

While the book itself was often difficult to follow for the reasons above, I do think it would translate extremely well to film, be it TV mini-series or big screen. The experience of being able to see the characters and the settings would make it easier to follow, and again, the premise is good.

This is an author I'll follow as I expect his skills to grow as he practices his craft.
