I am returning to read more Hardy. It's been a long time since I wrote my thesis on Five Novels fifty years ago. At that time, I chose a musical topic - rhythms and patterns in the novels of Thomas Hardy. I should have chosen the "women," who are all amazing and represent so many of the questions about our rights, even in this century. It's not difficult to return to an appreciation of his sometimes complex sentences, as I think he excels in describing very nuanced changes in character's thought progression. So much more sensitive than in modern writing. So difficult to catch the shades of emotional color. The Wessex Tales really border on old superstitions and tricks the mind can play, almost to the level of science fiction writing. I have been lucky to find the 52 novels in one book for just $1.50 and so I am going to finish up by reading everything. He was my writing "father," and now that I'm retired, I can get to know the whole body of his wonderful works. I probably lived in Wessex, right out on the heath he writes so beautifully about. The first sentence of "The Return of the Native" is just completely brilliant. See if you don't agree.Product details

Kind of fun but very predictable. I used the dictionary a lot.
Thomas Hardy never ceases to capture the feelings of the common man dealing with life at its most bizarre or most depressing. These short stories are no exception.
this covers it all for hardy -- irony, coincidence, tragedy, all done in short stories that draw you in immediately. after tess, jude, far from the madding crowd, and the complete poems, this is the 5th book to own by hardy. after those, you might want to try desperate remedies.
This volume contains many of Hardy's best short stories. The formatting is well done. Some people say Hardy is an anachronism, but many of his stories, "The Withered Arm", for example, are riveting today.
The stories in this book are cleverly written. Hardy, known for sudden twists in his hardyesque style, knows how to keep the reader going. I'm not a fan of short stories. They end too soon, before they've begun. Hardy juxtaposes the short story and the novella. Enough to give you a heavy dose of excellent characterisation but not enough to take too much of your time. Just perfect for those on the go or too busy for extensive reading. The 6 stories here explore themes of love, loss, betrayal, longing, unrequited love, and ideas far ahead of their times, like women not wanting to be married at all (interlopers at the knap). An imaginative woman is just heartbreaking as a tragedy, so is the withered arm. All in all a great read with his best stories.
I'm convinced that Thomas Hardy is one of the greatest writers in the English language because he mastered so many different literary genres. He was a master poet, and his novels have received great attention, as they should have. His short stories, however, seem to have received less attention, which is a shame. These stories are beautiful examples of how well-written literature can capture the fragility of life, affairs of the heart, and human sentiments which Hardy masterfully couches in the cultural and regional traditions and lifestyles.
My favorite story here is called "Fellow-townsmen" where Hardy shows us town life mixed with love and the many regrets associated with it. These are stories of hangings, mystic manifestations, ghost-like appearances, foreigners and smugglers all in the English rural landscape of Wessex. Hardy portrays the ever-changing life in this countryside through characters whose lives are like flower blooms blown around in the Wessex wind.
Highly Recommended reading! Also read the other collection of short stories by Hardy called "Life's Little Ironies".
An excellent anthology of tales from yore. I used to think that O'Henry (nee William Sidney Porter) specialized in the 'twist in the tale', also called 'O'Henry twist'. But now I'd say Hardy beats him hollow. The bonus is the usual rich description of locale - the land, the flora & the fauna, the distinctive characteristics of the people (both physical and as to the disposition). Once you get the taste, Hardy has this uncanny ability to keep you mesmerized; even in tales which are not 'mystery stories' in the conventional sense, a Hardy tale is as good as (or better than) any page turner. It keeps your attention riveted, and you can almost feel the terrain and the people as if walking around you...
